Convert ZPL to DPL: printing Zebra-designed labels on Datamax-O'Neil / Honeywell printers
ZPL to Datamax DPL equivalents, how named ZPL parameters become fixed-width DPL records, unit conversion, a worked example and what to verify on I-Class, M-Class and Honeywell PC/PM printers in DPL mode.
The forward direction appears when a corporate label library lives in ZPL but a plant still runs Datamax I-Class or M-Class units, or Honeywell PC/PM printers configured in DPL mode. Rather than replacing hardware that works, the label is translated. DPL's record format means the translator must compute positions in hundredths of an inch and pack every field into its fixed columns.

What actually changes
- Named parameters become positions in a record: a mistake of one character shifts every following field. Generate records programmatically; never hand-edit.
- Coordinates: dots → hundredths of an inch (÷2.03 at 203 dpi) with row before column.
- Scalable text: ZPL ^A0 at 36 dots ≈ DPL font 9 with a smooth font code and a point size; sizes round to what the printer has loaded.
- Human-readable text under barcodes is selected by the symbology letter case in DPL (uppercase with text, lowercase without), not by a separate flag.
- Printer-side defaults: heat and speed persist between jobs on Datamax units; send H and P explicitly so a job printed after someone else's does not come out faint.
