Convert TPCL to ZPL: moving Toshiba TEC label jobs to Zebra printers
How Toshiba TPCL format/data commands become ZPL fields, converting 0.1 mm coordinates to dots, fonts and barcode types, a worked example and a migration checklist.
A retailer that standardizes on Zebra after years of Toshiba B-SA and B-EX printers has hundreds of TPCL jobs generated by its POS or WMS. TPCL is readable — commands in braces with clear separators — so the translation to ZPL is mostly a matter of merging each format/data pair into one field and converting metric positions to dots for the target resolution.

What to watch
- Positions: 0.1 mm → dots (×0.8 at 203 dpi, ×1.18 at 300 dpi). TPCL jobs written for a 300 dpi B-EX print identically on a 203 dpi Zebra only if you convert, not copy, the numbers.
- Pairing: an RC or RB data line refers to its PC/XB format by number; if a job reuses a format across labels, the format lines may only appear once at the top of the stream.
- Fonts: TPCL font letters and magnifications → ^A0 with a measured height; outline fonts map most directly.
- Barcode numbers → ^B commands; TPCL specifies narrow bar and ratio, which become ^BY; Data Matrix and QR parameters differ in cell size units.
- Issue command: {XS} cut and sensor settings become ^MM / ^MN in ZPL, and copies become ^PQ.
