Convert EPL2 to ZPL: modernize legacy label files for current Zebra printers
How to turn EPL2 jobs from LP/TLP printers into ZPL for ZD/ZT series, with command equivalents, a before/after example and a migration checklist.
Companies replacing decade-old LP 2844 units with ZD421 or ZT411 printers discover that their ERP has been sending EPL2 for years and nobody kept the original designs. Modern Zebra printers can emulate EPL2, but emulation ignores the new printer's resolution and features; converting to native ZPL is the clean path.

What you gain and what to check
- Scalable fonts: EPL2 font 4 ×1 (roughly 24 dots high) becomes ^A0N,24,24 — and now you can pick any size, so this is the moment to fix cramped labels.
- Resolution: LP/TLP were 203 dpi; if the new printer is 300 dpi, scale all coordinates ×1.48 or the label prints at two-thirds size.
- Barcodes: EPL2's B command carried narrow and wide widths inline; in ZPL declare ^BY once and check the ratio (ZPL defaults to 3.0, EPL2 jobs often used 2:4 = 2.0).
- Counters: EPL2 jobs generated by an ERP usually contain the literal serial; in ZPL you can move serialization into ^SN or, better, keep it in the software with a central counter.
